Epping Forest MP Eleanor Laing has praised everyone involved in preparing Waltham Abbey for the arrival of the Olympic Torch Relay on Saturday.
An estimated 20,000 people turned out to line the route of the relay from the Crooked Mile, along Sewardstone Road, down Sun Street, across Market Square and along Church Street and Highbridge Street to the Lea Valley White Water Centre.
Mrs Laing said: "The Olympic Torch relay was a great occasion and one which the thousands of people who turned out to witness will remember for a long time.
"I would like to congratulate everyone who was involved in preparing the town for the arrival of the Torch Relay - the district and town council - and all the police officers, community support officers and security staff who all had a part to play in ensuring that Waltham Abbey's 20 minutes or so in the world's spotlight would be a truly memorable event."
Mrs Laing added: "The 'East meets West' theme was inspirational - and brilliantly illustrated by the meeting on the Meridian Line of the Epping Forest Pipe Band and the Chinese Dragons."
